Plants That Grow Best In College Station

College Station is a part of Texas that sees some pretty hot summer months.  As a homeowner, you may think that nothing you plant will  survive.  This is not so since there are some plants that fair better in the central part of the state than others; these are known as native plants.

Plant Noisette Rose is from the Rosaceae family and Rosa genus.  The cultivar is Juane Desprez.  This plant grows to a height of 12-50 feet with spacing that needs to be 10-12 feet apart.  The bloom colors are in the yellow family.  The shape is double, quartered and cupped with an extreme fragrance.  The bloom time for the Noisette Rose is  repeatedly in late spring to early summer.

The Shrimp Plant is part of the Acanthaceae family, Justicia genus and Lemon Sorbet cultivar.  The plant grows to a height of 24-36 inches and needs to be spaced 24-36 inches apart.  The flowers will bloom into a yellowish green color with evergreen foliage.  The Shrimp Plant grows repeatedly.

The Purple Bee Balm plant is from the Lamiaceae family, Monarda genus, Peter’s Purple cultivar and they are in the Perennials category.  These plants grow to a height of 4-6 feet with beautiful colors in the purple family such as violet and lavender.  The bloom time is late spring, early summer and mid summer.

The Tropical Hibiscus plant is part of the Malvaceae family, the genus of Hibiscus and the Jane Cowl cultivar.  This plant grows to a height of 6-10 feet and should be spaced 36-48 inches apart.  The plant produces a bloom in coral colors with evergreen foliage.  This plant needs full sun and blooms repeatedly all year long.

The best advice is to start small.  Each time you have a successful plant, try another next time around.  The key is to keep your landscape modest and not use too many different types of plants or those that are not necessarily native to College Station or Central Texas.
