Dress up the Front Yard for Curb Appeal

Curb appeal plays a big part in how others look at your home and also in how you look at your home. Driving up to a beautiful home increases the home's value both financially and emotionally. When you have a nice looking home, you take a little more pride in the house and it offers you and your family beautiful surroundings to enjoy together.

Caring for the Yard

When it comes to curb appeal, the first time that you want to work on is the yard. Keeping up with yard maintenance makes it easy to have a nice looking yard. The better you keep up with maintenance, the less that you will have to do each week when it comes to the yard.
If you have grass, make sure to keep the grass green. There are fertilizers that you can put down to make the grass grow thicker and more attractive. Watering grass every few days is an absolute necessity in the Texas heat. Keep the grass properly watered and place down fertilizer for a yard that will make your neighbors green with envy.

Plant Trees

A tree is a great way to beat the heat in the hot College Station, Texas sun. If you do not have one, plant a tree in the front yard. Trees can be purchased from flower nurseries as well as some home improvement stores. Remember to cut branch as necessary to keep your tree properly pruned.

Use Rock Art

Some homeowners may feel that it is difficult to keep plants and flowers alive under the blazing southwestern sun. One way to avoid having to try to keep plants alive but still have a well decorated yard is to create a rock garden and rock decorations. Line the sidewalk to your front door with beautiful stones. In the space designated for a garden, create a pretty sitting area with beautiful surrounding stones.

Best Plants And Landscaping For Bryan College Station

Home of the Texas A&M Aggies and Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, Bryan College Station is one of the best places to live anywhere to live in the US. With plenty of jobs, family friendly attractions as well as the fun of a Texas college city, Bryan College Station stands out. When landscaping your house in this part of the country, you need to take a few things into consideration, as the weather here is quite extreme and unpredictable. It can go from monsoon type weather to months of drought in the same year so you need plants that are hearty and can take a good deal of sunlight. Here are a few good examples of great plants that thrive in this area.

Blood Leaf Banana: This striking plant is known for its foliage, which is quite beautiful, and its ability to take an extreme amount of sunlight. Planted in singles or in groups, this plant makes great accent pieces to any home or garden. Be careful in small areas though as this plant makes leaves close to 10 inches and can dwarf small spaces. This one also makes a good potted plant as long as the area gets sun.

Yellow Bells: While these absolutely gorgeous flowers grow well in sunlight, they will need some afternoon shade during the hottest parts of the day. They grow quite high and will need some trimming but make great landscaping plants closer to the home where they will get shade.

Plumbago: These wonderful plants will grow into large bushes and will grow on a trellis if you have the patience, which pays off with the beautiful blue flowers it produces. Thriving in the hottest summers, this plant is nearly resistant to all diseases, conditions, and even deer. This perennial can be used nearly anywhere in a landscaping project.

Watering Guidelines

There are certain watering guidelines for lawns throughout Central Texas.  As a homeowner, you want a nice looking lawn.  A beautiful lawn will enhance the look of the exterior of your home, giving your home great curb appeal.

For the latter part of the winter and the early onset of spring, which would be January and February, the rainfall is pretty adequate in the area so not as much watering is needed.  If there is no rain for 3-4 weeks, it is recommended that you water your lawn.

March, April and May are spring months in the state.  Rainfall will really depend on the season but you want to water your lawn about once per week if you see less than an inch of rainfall.

Summer months are scorchers in Texas.  June, July, August and the early part of September can be hot and downright brutal on your lawn.  If there has been less than an inch of rainfall then you need to heavily water each section of your lawn at the minimum of twice per week.

Fall is also known as brown patch season and occurs in the latter half of September and October.  Brown patch season is mainly triggered by too much watering so reduce the frequency that you water your lawn during this time of the year.  For the latter half of September you only want to water your lawn once a week if there has been no rain.  In October, if there has been no rain, only water your lawn twice that month.

November and December are late fall and early winter season.  The rainfall during this period is usually adequate enough that you don’t have to water your lawn hardly at all.  If there has been no rain for 3-4 weeks then you will want to give your lawn a good watering.

Texas summers can be tough on your lawn.  However, just by adhering to simple watering guidelines, you can maintain your beautiful green lawn with ease.

Plants That Grow Best In College Station

College Station is a part of Texas that sees some pretty hot summer months.  As a homeowner, you may think that nothing you plant will  survive.  This is not so since there are some plants that fair better in the central part of the state than others; these are known as native plants.

Plant Noisette Rose is from the Rosaceae family and Rosa genus.  The cultivar is Juane Desprez.  This plant grows to a height of 12-50 feet with spacing that needs to be 10-12 feet apart.  The bloom colors are in the yellow family.  The shape is double, quartered and cupped with an extreme fragrance.  The bloom time for the Noisette Rose is  repeatedly in late spring to early summer.

The Shrimp Plant is part of the Acanthaceae family, Justicia genus and Lemon Sorbet cultivar.  The plant grows to a height of 24-36 inches and needs to be spaced 24-36 inches apart.  The flowers will bloom into a yellowish green color with evergreen foliage.  The Shrimp Plant grows repeatedly.

The Purple Bee Balm plant is from the Lamiaceae family, Monarda genus, Peter’s Purple cultivar and they are in the Perennials category.  These plants grow to a height of 4-6 feet with beautiful colors in the purple family such as violet and lavender.  The bloom time is late spring, early summer and mid summer.

The Tropical Hibiscus plant is part of the Malvaceae family, the genus of Hibiscus and the Jane Cowl cultivar.  This plant grows to a height of 6-10 feet and should be spaced 36-48 inches apart.  The plant produces a bloom in coral colors with evergreen foliage.  This plant needs full sun and blooms repeatedly all year long.

The best advice is to start small.  Each time you have a successful plant, try another next time around.  The key is to keep your landscape modest and not use too many different types of plants or those that are not necessarily native to College Station or Central Texas.
