Having a nice garden in your yard can increase home value, enhance your
home’s appearance to neighbors, and provide a nice retreat for those busy days.
Of course planting and maintaining a garden in Central Texas can be quite the
challenge. If you are looking for a great way to add a garden to your home why
not consider a shade garden.
Shade gardens incorporate plants that grow really well in little to no
sun. If you have a number of large trees or if your home throws shade over a
large part of your yard during the day then you have the perfect setting for a
shade garden.
A few plants that are proven to grow well in Texas shade are fern
acacia, Widows tears, Turk’s cap and frog fruit. Fern acacia is a small shrub
that grows two to three feet tall. During the summertime small fuzzy white
flowers bloom, adding a nice soft color to your garden.
Widow’s tears are normally used as groundcover, and will bloom from
spring until fall. Flowers bloom in a large range of blue shades. This plant
can be aggressive and can overtake other plants in your garden if you don’t
trim it back.
Growing well in nearly any soil typo found in the Texas panhandle,
Turk’s cap normally grows to three feet tall, but can grow larger. During the
summer bright red flowers bloom and are then followed by red berries in the
fall. This shrub will attract birds to your home.
Frog fruit is another groundcover that produces lovely white flowers.
Butterflies love the small flower. Frog fruit will grow well in almost any type
of soil, but this plant can grow rather aggressively, and should be trimmed
back.
